Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed …” I hope every Christian can agree this pronouncement, but I realize it’s easy to be overwhelmed by confusion, sorrow, and discouragement. But consider four concepts to help you be victorious.
First, trust. Job 13:15 says, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.” Job didn’t understand why he was experiencing intense suffering. And while his faith went up and down like a roller coaster throughout the book, he didn’t give up. Don’t give up because you don’t understand the hardship that comes to you.
Second, prayer. Christians are instructed, “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7). We’re also reminded that “the effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16). If God does not remove the “thorn,” He will give you sufficient grace to endure (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). We’re assured by the Lord Himself that the Father will give good gifts to His children (Matthew 7:7-11).
Third, fellowship. Christians are taught to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). There are numerous examples in the New Testament of Christians helping one another (Acts 2:44-45; 4:34-37; 9:39). Those who serve God are never alone (Hebrews 13:5-6). Proving it more than just a concept, Elijah was comforted and encouraged by God (1 Kings 19:18).
Fourth, hope. Paul in Romans 8:25, “But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.” One undeniable fact today is that people are searching for hope. However, our afflictions are light and momentary compared to the eternal glory we’ll receive (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).
If you’re in distress, be patient and wait on the Lord. Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14; cp. James 5:7-8). If you will put these concepts into your heart, you will be more than a conquerors (Romans 8:37).
