Some Good News

No matter how hard the media and Hollywood have tried to paint abstinence as outdated and idiotic, a new study shows that a solid majority of U.S. teens would like to be virgins when they marry.

Sixty-one percent of America’s youth said they would like to not have sex until marriage, and 63% of respondents said they would like to regain their virginity if possible. Results from the report are surprising given the increase teen exposure to sexually explicit media content — such as the latest controversy over MTV’s “Skins,” a program on the popular network which contained vivid depictions of teen sex and drug use — and how they are portrayed by the media. This survey encouragingly shows that not all young boys are up for sex anywhere, anytime with anyone, nor are young girls desperate to have sex with their boyfriends because they are afraid of losing them. The study furthermore found that 82% of respondents believe that God intended marriage to last a lifetime.

It is so easy to think that teenagers are nothing but hormonally-charged nymphomaniacs ready to engage in immorality at the drop of the hat. But we must give them more credit. If parents will give them guidance about waiting for sex until they are married, chances are they will make you proud by following God’s will for purity.
