We first become acquainted with Abraham’s life in Genesis 11:27. In Acts 7:2-4 Stephen said, “The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, and said to him, ‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’ Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell.”
When he was told to “get out,” it’s hard for us to imagine what he had to leave — but consider these three. First, he had to leave the false for the true. Abraham was raised in an idolatrous situation (Joshua 24:2, 14). Second, he had to leave the easier for the harder. He left a city for the more difficult tent life (Hebrews 11:9). Third, he had to leave the known for the unknown. He had grown up in his life for 75 years (Genesis 12:4).
Abraham did whatever he was told, including the supreme sacrifice of offering his only son (Genesis 22:10; Hebrews 11:17). He’s a great example to follow!
