Unborn Child Rights

The recent election was marked by one political party who ran on the main platform of abortion rights. For several years the slogan has been, “My body, my choice.” This reminded me of a well-known landmark (at that time) court case back in the 1990s. A Montgomery, Alabama judge appointed an attorney to protect the interests of the unborn child of a teenager seeking an abortion. Advocates on both sides of the abortion issue said the action by Circuit Judge Mark Anderson was a first in Alabama and among the first in the nation (again, at that time).

“It’s a brave first step forward,” said Tom Blackerby, state director for the American Family Association. In 1987, the Alabama Legislature enacted a law that required a girl under 18 to get a parent’s consent before having an abortion. The Legislature allowed one exception: A judge can allow a girl to get an abortion without a parent’s consent if she’s mature enough to make the decision on her own or if she’s a victim of parental abuse.

For 50 years, the American people have put to death over sixty million unborn children without anyone being put in the legal position of upholding the “child’s rights.” Decades ago, Alabama’s judicial rules allowed a judge to appoint a guardian for an unborn child in property and inheritance matters, but not until that case came along in 1998 were there guardians appointed for life interests.

But all along, the Bible has upheld “children’s rights” because God has given a precious spirit to the life forming within the womb. God said in Ezekiel 18:4, “All souls are Mine.” Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” The psalmist said, “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13). The Lord told Rebekah, “Two nations are in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger” (Genesis 25:23).

How dare we subvert God’s wonderful gift in the form of children by putting to death those that we don’t want? This is an abomination to God! Pray that one day children will be elevated beyond political pawns, and their precious souls to the place God gave them.
