Joy in Christ: Learn Contentment

Contrary to popular belief, the grass is not greener on the other side. The lie that Satan has always sought to convince us of is that if we only had some- thing that we do not presently have, we would be completely content. This began all the way back in the garden. Genesis 3:4-5 says, “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

When we build our lives on having things we will never be satisfied. The more we have, the more we will want (Hebrews 13:5). Solomon wrote, “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity” (Ecclesiastes 5:10). Jesus added, “Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15).

Truly trusting in God will allow us to enjoy contentment (Matthew 6:25-32). No bird has ever tried to build more nests than its neighbor; no fox ever fretted because it only had one hold in which to live; and no squirrel ever died in anxiety lest he should not lay up enough nuts for two winters instead of one. Paul made the comment in Philippians 4:11 that he had to learn contentment. In our society which pushes us to continually yearn for more and more, the Christian can learn to be content with what they have; and contentment will bring great joy to the Christian over their lifetime.
