A Good Man

The world respects a good man. Every man who has done good in this life is respected and held in high esteem by others. Psalm 112:5-10 instructs us how to be good in the sight of God. Five qualities are listed and will be considered in this brief space.

First, a good man is generous. The psalmist says he shows favor and lends. One of the most powerful tools a Christian has to convert others is their enthusiastic, moral life. God wants brethren who are compassionate with one another and shows forth the loving nature of Christ (Galatians 6:10; James 1:27). When people see us living like this, they will respond to it.

Second, a good man is discrete. Other versions render this as “maintain his cause in judgment” or “conducts his affairs with justice.” “Discrete” is not quite sufficient. The idea is that the good man is equitable and will be proven as such in the affairs of men. Those who try to cheat each other are not good men. We are to be upright and honest with everyone at all times.

Third, a good man is remembered. The everlasting remembrance will be found in heaven. No matter what one does, they will not be remembered beyond a short period of time (Ecclesiastes 1:11). Can you think of the names of your great-grandparents? But one can be remembered by those whom he served in this life and he can be remembered in heaven. Abel’s deeds were remembered even beyond this life (Hebrews 11:4).

Fourth, a good man is confident. With the Lord on our side, why would we ever need to worry (Hebrews 13:6)? The heart of a good man can always remain steadfast and established. Worry is a common enemy, but the child of God can face everything that assails their life with confidence that God will never leave them or forsake them.

Fifth, a good man is victorious. Victory will be ours both in this life and in the life to come (Mark 10:29-30; John 16:33; 1 John 5:4). The wicked see the prosperity and blessedness of the good man and will waste away. The longings and desires of the wicked ultimately will come to nothing. No matter what others may think they can do to you, ultimate victory will be yours.

How do you stack up? Are you a good man? If you are not, you certainly can be. Meditate upon these words and change your character to what the Lord describes as being good. You will receive a peaceful and happy existence now and eternal riches later for your change.
