Since the Supreme Court decision in 1973 to legalize abortion, well over 20 million have been performed. People on both sides of this issue feel very passionate about their views. However, as with all things, the question is not about how we feel, but about what the Bible says.
The word of God reveals that children are something special and should be treated well. We can see in the writings of the Psalmist that “children are an heritage of the Lord” (Psa. 127:3). Scripture also shows us that women who did not have children were greatly distressed and when they did finally have them they considered themselves blessed (Sarah, Hannah, etc.). In fact, one of the greatest evidences that children are special in the eyes of God is that fathers are told to “bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4; cf. Deut. 6:3-9). Teaching a child the truth manifests a parents love for them! Children are to be cherished.
Moreover, the Bible condemns the taking of human life. From the beginning murder has been a transgression of God’s will (Gen. 4:8-12). After the flood we have recorded the word of Jehovah as he instructs Noah, “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man” (Gen. 9:6). Further, murder is a work of the flesh for which a person will suffer eternal punishment (Gal. 5:21). Clearly, the unlawful taking of human life is sinful!
Abortion is murder! Some pro-abortionist try to argue that life does not begin until birth and therefore abortion cannot be considered murder. This argument is wholly without Biblical foundation as we see that the same term “babe” is used to describe the Lord, as he was in the manger, and John, as he was yet in the womb (Lk. 2:12, 16; 1:44). Consequently, since it is sinful to take a life, and abortion is the taking of a life, abortion is sinful!
Those who are guilty of this need to see their sin has separated them from God and the way to be free from that sin, or any sin, is to have faith in the Lord, repent, confess Christ as the Son of God, and be immersed for the remission of sins (Heb. 11:6; Acts 17:30; 8:36-37; Mk. 16:16).
