Athletes Gone Broke

An online article reported that several athletes, some earning up to 250 million dollars, have see their financial worlds collapse. Athletes such as Mark Brunell, Bjorn Borg, Dorothy Hamill, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Lawrence Taylor have all sought bankruptcy protection to some degree or another.

No one should ever rejoice in the suffering of another, and some of this financial “pain” these people are going through is not their fault, but it does serve to teach us a lesson. Too often people believe that a big bank account equals security. How quickly it can disappear! We are told that our lives do not consist of what we own (Luke 12:15), and that we should trust in God and not be covetous (Hebrews 13:5). Both good lessons to learn from formerly wealthy athletes.
