Are We Saved by Grace Alone?

We are not saved by grace alone, nor are we saved by faith alone, but Ephesians 2:8-10 says we are saved by grace through faith, both are required in order for man to have redemption from his sins. The very fact that God loved us enough to put into action a plan to redeem man constitutes grace.

Our redemption is something we could not attain without God’s unmerited favor, and this unmerited favor, or grace, is manifested in His son Jesus Christ. Having said that we cannot stop there because Paul says that faith is also required.

What is faith? Let’s look at some biblical examples:

  • Isaac was offered on an altar (Genesis 22:1-18).
  • The walls of Jericho fell (Joshua 6:1-21).
  • Isaac was offered on an altar by faith (Hebrews 11:17).
  • The walls of Jericho fell by faith (Hebrew 11:30).

Matthew 8:5-13 talks about the centurion’s servant is healed. The centurion made known his understanding of Jesus’ authority and His subjects’ necessity to obey that authority by saying that he was also a man under authority and having men under his authority — Jesus said that was faith.
