Have you ever just called it quits, given up, and turned and walked away from something? The world frowns on quitters. We look down on those who do not finish a job or commitment. But Christians are suppose to call it quits, give up, and walk away from the ways of the world.
In Romans 6:1-7, we’re to be dead to sin, and alive in Christ. In Galatians 5:19-21, we’re to put to death the works of the flesh. Ephesians 4:22-24 terms it as being a “new man,” while 5:3-7 names specific sins such as fornication, uncleanness, and covetousness which should never be named among Christians.
However, some of what’s in the world isn’t sinful in and of itself. But when we lose our spiritual priority, we commit sin. In Luke 9:57-62, we’re told that there’s a high cost to following Jesus. It’s our responsibility not to look back. In Luke 10:38-42, Martha was chastised for not listening to Jesus when she had the chance. In Matthew 13:3-8, the parable of the sower warned us about the cares of the world because they choked the word and it became unfruitful (v. 22).
How do we accomplish this balance? Romans 12:1-2 says to set our minds to be different than the world. Whereas Galatians 5:19-21 described evil works of the flesh, vv. 22-26 shows that we can fill our lives with goodness and be blessed.
