Is There a Higher Power?

Human beings have limitations, and when it comes to the incredible world that we live in, we’ll always know some things, but never all things.

Because mankind is inquisitive, we wonder where we came from and how we got here. We observe the complexity and order of the Earth live and think to ourselves that something greater than human beings must be in existence. What is this higher power? Has mankind come to an answer? Is there evidence to show that God created us?

Historical cultures believed in a creative being. Mankind has turned away from a belief in a Creator only within the last 200 years of human existence. Before that, great scientific minds believed that a power greater than the Universe created it. The Greeks believed that Chaos, a shapeless mass of darkness, was once the only god and then out of him came night and the deep. From this came Mother Earth and Father Sky. These two became husband and wife, and had many children. The Egyptians believed that Isis and Osiris were two gods who gave birth to Egypt by creating civilization and giving prosperity to the people of the Nile Valley. The Chinese believed that within the darkness of the dawn of time, an egg formed with Pangu on the inside. He grew and broke out out of the egg. The lighter parts of the egg floated upward creating the heavens, the denser parts downward creating the earth. Pangu then died, and his body went to make the world and all its elements like the sun, moon, clouds, and wind.

Other cultures such as the Meso-Americans (Incan, Mayan, and Aztecs) and the Hindi people all had creation accounts. The common thread between each of these cultures is the fact that the people didn’t recognize themselves as supreme beings, but as servants. They looked at the structure and order of everything around them. They saw that seasons change and the Earth died and came back to life each spring. They learned and then became convinced that this intricate system was conceived and created by a mind greater than theirs.

The Bible answers all questions about origins by plainly declaring that God is the creative being of the Universe (Genesis 1:1; Hebrews 11:3). Yes, we take this position by faith (Hebrews 11:6), but evolutionists must take their stance on the same basis. Scientists have no evidence of the claim of the Big Bang and long-term uniformitarian change. They believe something they haven’t seen. What they do have is years of research, experimentation, and observation — but no natural proof of their theory.

When anyone considers the magnificent creation of the Earth, its design is clear (Psalm 19:1), because it is the handiwork of God (Psalm 33:4-6; 100:3). God is the giver of life (Genesis 2:7; Ecclesiastes 12:7; Isaiah 42:5). While evolutionists believe that they can explain the formation of our physical bodies, no other source than God has the ability to give us our spirit (Acts 17:28).

Not only is our world complex, but there is a power that sustains it, that holds it together. The Scriptures affirm that power comes from Christ (Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:3). The tilt of the Earth, the orbit of the planets, the distance that Earth is from the sun are all vital aspects for our planet to sustain continuous life. And yet evolutionary theory tries to convince us that this was all formed by many random events over billions of years. Even the basic building blocks of life, atoms, are held together by an inexplicable energy force. If there wasn’t that perfect balance of energy, the Earth would fall apart. A world of this complexity isn’t the product of randomness over a long period of time, but rather an executed design by a mind that surpasses all human understanding.

By creating the Universe, God has given proof that He exists and the words He has spoken are true (Isaiah 45:7-8, 12, 18; John 1:1-3; Romans 1:18-21). Dr. George Wald, Professor Emeritus of Biology at the University of Harvard and Nobel Peace Prize winner in Biology, refers to evolution in this way: “There are only two possibilities as to how life arose; one is spontaneous generation arising to evolution, the other is a supernatural creative act of God, there is no third possibility. Spontaneous generation that life arose from non-living matter was scientifically disproved 120 years ago by Louis Pasteur and others. That leaves us with only one possible conclusion that life arose as a creative act of God. I will not accept that philosophically because I do not want to believe in God, therefore I choose to believe in that which I know is scientifically impossible, spontaneous generation arising to evolution.”

Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’”. While tremendous scientific minds continually try to prove evolution, the Word of God has already revealed their true motives in doing so. The truth of God, backed up by centuries of secular history, prove that a higher being designed and created the Universe. Every time we look up at the night sky, or feel the wind in our face, we’re experiencing the proof of God’s creation. It was once said that the Earth is evidence that demands a verdict, and this is true because you can’t ignore the topic of where we came from. Use your time on God’s Earth to repent of your sins, humble yourself, and dedicate your God-given life to the service of our great Creator and Judge (Psalm 148:1-20; Acts 17:26-31).
