Living to a Higher Standard

Several years ago, New York’s governor, Eliot Spitzer, resigned after it was learned that he paid a prostitute for sex. When new governor David Paterson was sworn-in, he admitted that he had cheated on his wife in earlier years.

In a press conference, Paterson said, “I think we have a marriage like many Americans, maybe even like many of you. Elected officials are really just reflections of the people we represent.” Although this is sadly true, it doesn’t change the fact that God created one man for one woman for life (Genesis 2:24).

The common practice of premarital sex, either through casual dating or living together, is condemned by the Word of God; the same holds true for adultery (Hebrews 13:4). It doesn’t matter that Mr. Paterson said that most marriages experience infidelity: it’s still wrong!

One of the fruits of the Spirit is self-control (Galatians 5:23). If someone is a Christian, they have the Bible which can help them to overcome the lusts of the flesh, whatever those lusts may be. Everyone is capable of controlling themselves and being faithful to their marriage vows.
