lukewarm

Lukewarm and Lost

In our Sunday morning Bible class we have been studying Revelation and the seven churches of Asia. In Revelation 2-3, we read the letters to the seven churches of Asia. In Revelation 3:14-17 the church in Laodicea is addressed, and in vs. 16 God says, “… because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot I will vomit you out of My mouth.” God was displeased with the Laodiceans because they had no passion for God’s word. I think that we can learn a lot from this church.

We need to make sure that we have passion for God’s word and are striving to grow and become better Christians. We can grow as Christians by studying our Bibles daily like the noble Bereans (Acts 17:11), and learning more about God’s word like Peter commanded in 1 Peter 2:2 and 2 Peter 3:18. We should also build others up so that we all can grow and one day be in heaven together (Ephesians 4:11-16).

In the rest of the letter to the Laodiceans, God says that if they do not regain their zeal and repent of being lukewarm, He will remove their lampstand. We obviously do not want anyone’s lampstand to be removed, which is why we should continue to show our zeal for the Lord our entire lives and not just the first two weeks after being baptized. Romans 12:1 says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” This is also why we should continue to build up other brothers and sisters in Christ as well.
