Memorial Day

Memorial Day

We soon will have the great opportunity to commemorate all those who died while actively serving in the military. I hope that we all thought for a moment on that day of the blessings we enjoy because of their sacrifice.

When Jesus was ready to be betrayed, He instituted His own memorial. Luke 22 records it for us: “And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you” (vss. 15-20). This memorial, contrary to the thinking of many in the religious world, was ob- served every first day of the week (cf. Acts 20:7), not once a year, once a quarter or once a month! It was also a solemn time to remember Christ’s death, and was not to be perverted into a common meal (1 Corinthians 11:17-34).

Let’s remember to keep the proper memorial and not partake of it in an “unworthy” manner. There is certainly nothing wrong with observing a memorial for our brave countrymen, but we must be obedient to God and observe His Son’s memorial every first day of the week in order to go to heaven.
