One of These Days It’s Gonna Melt

I have always had an attitude problem with shoveling snow. I realize that I need to shovel it before the temperature turns colder and it will be frozen too hard to shovel, and I realize the safety hazards it creates in trying to walk through it to the car or sidewalk. But somehow, in the back of my mind is the idea, “one of these days, it’s gonna melt.”

Isn’t this an attitude that sometimes affects us when it comes to assuming responsibilities for the Lord’s work? We see something that needs to be done or a problem that needs to be dealt with. We shrug our shoulders and think, “Well, somebody else will eventually get around to it” or “Maybe if I ignore it, it will work itself out.” In some situations maybe both will happen. But all too often opportunity has passed us by or greater problems have arisen.

When there is something to be done — let’s do it! When a problem needs to be solved — let’s get at it! The one talent man learned the hard way what happens if we try to ignore using what we have (Matthew 25:28-29). I am glad the Samaritan did not have that attitude when he saw the severely injured man lying at the side of the road. He immediately did what he could!

The “one of these days it’s gonna melt” attitude will not work with the Lord. As Paul says in Colossians 3:23, “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” Let’s use this week to show God that we do not shirk responsibilities when it comes to His work. If there are things that need to be done, let us do them with all our might.
