How important is the Bible? Is it more than a decoration in your home? Is it more than something that sits on your lap while you are worshiping God? Think about the contents of the Bible for a moment.

The words of this book reveals the mind of God, the state of man, the way of eternal life, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of saints. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, obey it to be saved, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s charter.

Here, heaven is opened and the gates of hell are disclosed. Christ (God in the flesh) is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God (truth, righteousness, peace, and joy) its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet.

Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given to you in life, will be opened at judgment, and abides forever. It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labor, and condemn all who alter its sacred contents. For all these reasons, the psalmist could write, “O how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day” (Psalm 119:97).
